The Hullabaloo Festival celebrates spontaneity and the joy of improvisation. Wild, unpredictable, fun, and provocative, the festival revels in how we ‘make it up as we go along’ and asks everyone to join in. The festival explores improvisation in sound and music, words and visuals and takes place at the CIC Creative Innovation Centre in Taunton.
There will be improvised sounds, animations, light projections, improvised poems, open sessions to join in, haunted dub soundscapes from Mandragora and much more
The festival starts with a lunchtime concert, followed by an open workshop, and an evening concert. Improvisation is an essential element of music making and has become a genre in itself, often called ‘free improvisation’. The festival also celebrates some of the wide range of music making and creativity we have in here in Somerset.
Featured will be the
- Hullabaloo Improvising Orchestra plus guests including poet Alice Madicott,
- Visual artist Richard Tomlinson,
- musician Mike Hurley and animator Nick Bickford.
Mike is a Somerset musician, a piano graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire and reggae drummer, the Hullabaloo Orchestra has been collaborating with local artist Nick Bickford creating soundtracks for his wild and colourful animations.
Hullabaloo is a monthly night of musical adventure at the CICCIC, open to all instrumentalists, singers, and sound explorers, using games, strategies, and exercises to develop listening and musical imaginations.
The orchestra creates music that grows and changes and plays with the joy and possibilities of improvisation. The group has been meeting for four years and has over 20 regular members, from viola to electronics, brass to singers. This is the fourth Hullaballoo Festival.
The Hullabaloo Orchestra is an open group that has been meeting at the CIC for over four years and this is its fourth festival. The group was started by local musician Tim Hill.
