This course 5 week course will provide you with a selection of observed explorations, development of ideas, skills and processes; development of a sample sketch book and textile related piece in either 2 or 3 dimensions.

Each term there is a new fresh project with embedded new skills and processes to explore and learn. This allows for those who are looking for a something more regular and for those who only wish to follow a short course of study. This term will be themed under the title of : ‘The Skin Your In’.
Outline of the course / workshops: This 5 -week course is Textiles related; be that for the body, interior or surface; final outcomes can be explored and decided by the learner. The 5 weeks of tutored workshops will have a clear starting point of initial research, a middle of research development and conclude with a resolution; with skills input running along-side each session.
Example programme: In week 1 you will start with an introduction to a cohesive theme to work from; ideas will develop through mark making, collage and collecting related imagery. In week 2 you will be guided to develop sketch books and portfolios within a textile’s context. In week 3 & 4 we will then develop hands on skills in relation to textiles e.g. simple print, fabric manipulation and stitch ideas to inform towards a conclusion in week 5 where you will have more one to one guided tutoring to support individual ideas.
Outcomes: Portfolio of observed explorations, development of ideas, skills and processes; evidenced in a sketch book and textile related piece in either 2 or 3 dimensions.
Who is this course intended for?
Those students who perhaps already enrolled at the CICCIC for print who are showing an aptitude towards textiles.
Someone who is wishing to build a portfolio either returning to textiles or changing direction in their creative field.
Mature student applying to HE courses (re: APL) and requires evidence of a subject specific portfolio
Those who have an established interested in textiles and wishes to explore a more in-depth approach to creating original work.
Forward future: working towards an optional certificated course such as City & Guild or similar.

Joan Herrington has over twenty-five years’ experience teaching Textiles and Fashion from students on further education courses, higher education level and latterly at adult education in private classes and workshops. Whilst initially she specialised in garment construction and pattern cutting, she found herself more and more drawn to textile and surface pattern design with a keen interest in hand stitching. Her work over the last ten years reflects this interest along with her love of old textiles and those from other cultures.
Gary Mills BA Hons Design Fashion, PGCE. After an extensive career that formerly started in the fashion & textile design industry, which progressed into the world of University academia becoming programme lead for fashion, textiles and surface design. Gary now pursues his passion in exploring his own practice and innovative style in his vast range of textile outcomes; but continues teaching privately those skills in creative textiles in all its many forms.
