Scenes and still lifes from West Somerset An Exhibition by Christopher Williams – 14th June -2nd July.
Gallery/Cafe open Tuesday – Saturday 10 -4pm ( Closed Friday afternoons from 12 noon).
Street scenes, beaches, crowded outdoor cafes, rolling hillsides, boatyards and harbours provide endless material and you may well find me on a Summer’s day along Watchet pier painting fishermen or attempting to capture the mood of a brooding cloud rolling up the channel.
I find all that I need to inspire me to squeeze out the tubes of paint and to pick up a brush right here on my doorstep in the beautiful West Somerset countryside and more often then not, it is the more ordinary subjects such as strong sunshine reflecting off a garden gate which compel me to capture that special moment in time.
I am a retired engineer and now spend most of my time painting local West Somerset scenes in a traditional plein air impressionistic style. I paint in oil and enjoy the composition involved with landscape painting and still life in which I try to convey a loose, spontaneous and expressive feeling.
Painting for me is an endless journey of discovery and development. It is definitely frustrating and exhausting at times but it is a continual source of stimulation. The next painting is always the one to look forward to.
If travelling a long distance to the gallery it is advisable to check opening times before setting out as there are workshops now and then at the centre.
