Exhibition Open Wednesday -Saturday ( except Friday afternoon after 1pm )
Founded at the end of 2021, Painters Progress is the name chosen by a Group of locally based amateur artists committed to working together to inspire the continuous development of our artistic technique, range and knowledge.
Painter’s Progress evolved from weekly classes taught by Sara Dudman RWA during 2019 – 2021 based around the study of the creative processes of prominent 20th century artists and artistic movements – ranging from Fauvism and Cubism to the Abstract Expressionism.
Painters’ Progress matured and flourished during the Covid lockdowns when with we found a way of harnessing the power of ZOOM to enable the continuation of our artistic journey. During weekly sessions we would typically watch a live demonstration providing insight into how our chosen artists deployed key elements of artistic repertoire – Composition, Colour, Tone, Pattern etc. After making studies of sections of a work by each artist we would create our own works incorporating their techniques. Each week we would submit our work to critical review by Sara and our peers – a process which taught us the value of critical objectivity and rigorous self-analysis.
These weekly ZOOM sessions during Covid not only proved invaluable in developing our artistic abilities but also helped immensely in shoring up individual morale and dispelling feelings of isolation during that very difficult period; mutual trust and close friendships between the Group’s members flourished.
Thus, when Sara decided in late 2021, that the time was right for her to reduce her teaching commitments to focus on her own artistic practice the Group decided that we wished to continue working and learning together and formed Painter’s Progress.
The Group’s successful formula is based around weekly meetings at which, typically, we critically review the work created during the previous week by each member, decide on an artist or theme to form the basis of next week’s “homework” and discuss matters artistic in general. We also arrange regular “plein air” days in the summer as well as occasional gallery and exhibition visits to extend artistic knowledge and stimulate creativity.
This exhibition celebrates the second anniversary of PP’s formation and is representative of everything achieved since October 2022. It follows a very successful exhibition last year on which there were many favourable comments including:-
“It was really interesting to see and learn how you had worked together but separately”.
