Painters Progress is the name chosen by a Group of locally based amateur artists committed to working together to foster the continuous development of our artistic technique, range and knowledge.
Painter’s Progress evolved from a series of weekly classes taught by Sara Dudman RWA at Taunton Brewhouse during 2019 – 2021 based around the study of the creative processes of prominent 20th century artists – from the Fauves and Cubists to the Abstract Expressionists.
Painters’ Progress matured and flourished during the Covid lockdowns when, with Sara’s inspiring guidance, we found a way of harnessing the power of ZOOM to enable continuation of our artistic journeys. During weekly sessions we would typically watch a live demonstration by Sara providing insight into how our chosen artists would deploy key elements of the artist’s repertoire – Composition, Colour, Tone, Pattern etc. We then made studies of sections of a work by each artist and finally created our own works incorporating their techniques. Each week we would submit our work to (always constructive) critical review by Sara and our peers – a process which taught us the value of rigorous self-analysis.
These weekly ZOOM sessions during Covid not only proved invaluable in developing our artistic abilities but also helped immensely in shoring up individual morale and dispelling feelings of isolation during that very difficult period; mutual trust and close friendships between the Group’s members flourished.
Thus, when Sara decided in late 2021, that the time was right for her to reduce her teaching commitments to focus on her own artistic practice the Group decided that we wished to continue working and learning together and formed Painter’s Progress.
The Group’s successful formula is based around weekly meetings at which, typically, we critically review the work created during the previous week by each member, decide on an artist or theme to form the basis of next week’s “homework” and discuss matters artistic in general. We also arrange occasional gallery and exhibition visits to extend artistic knowledge and stimulate creativity.
This exhibition celebrates the first anniversary of PP’s formation and is representative of everything achieved since November 2021.
If you are travelling a long way it is advisable to contact the gallery to check availability as there are occasionally conferences and training sessions held at the centre from time to time. 01823 337 477
