It is with regret that we have to cancel this event due to the government’s announcement for people not to attend theatres, pubs and venues (see https://tinyurl.com/t6ssvqa). Therefore, it would seem appropriate to cancel the event and reschedule it for another date.

We cannot believe we have such seasoned jazz players performing the amazing works of Dave Brubeck and with our cafe and bar you can enjoy this uplifting jazz concert in our amazing Memorial Hall during the day.

At a time of seismic changes in jazz in the 1950s, the Dave Brubeck quartet pointed jazz in yet another new direction with their innovative combination of harmony and unusual time signatures. This quartet will remind you of some of their well-known as well as less familiar repertoire, loosely based on their 1954 Jazz Goes to College album.

About The Jazz Players

Hywel Davies – piano. Hywel is an award-winning composer across a wide spectrum of different music genres and has spent time studying Brubeck’s unique approach. In recent years Hywel has also been at the forefront of developing the jazz idiom in its different forms around our local area.

Luke Belcher – bass. Luke brought his great talents to UK from New Zealand in recent years and is currently working with Hywel’s jazz trio Year of the Turtle and the Sarah Griffiths classic jazz trio.

Jim White – drums. Jim has been playing jazz for almost his whole life, in the course of which he has worked with many important jazz names, including Don Rendell, Iain Ballamy and recently with pianist Jon Law. He grew up with brother Tony in a family always involved with music and musical performers in and around Frome.

Tony White – alto sax. Tony has been playing jazz for most of his life and “cool school” West Coast Jazz remains one of his biggest influences. Paul Desmond’s alto playing in that Jazz Goes to College LP left an impression that remains as alive today.

The quartet include several Brubeck originals together with some of the American Song Book standards on their album, giving you a broad spectrum of the music that made the Dave Brubeck Quartet so famous with a truly international audience.
